How to Plan BMW Maintenance Around Your Vehicle’s Service History

A useful BMW maintenance plan starts with what your car needs now, what has already been done, and what its manufacturer recommends. Bring your service records and any current service messages. We can help you put that information together and discuss the next steps.
Start with the records you have
You do not need a perfectly organized folder to make an appointment. Invoices, inspection reports, and notes from previous visits give us a starting point. Look for the date, mileage, and work completed on each record. A recommendation on an old estimate is different from a record showing that the work was performed.
If you recently bought the car, bring the records that came with it. Mark anything you are unsure about rather than guessing when a service was last done.
What to bring to a maintenance visit
| What you have | What to look for | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Service invoices | Date, mileage, and completed work | Which scheduled items are documented? |
| An earlier inspection or estimate | Recommendations and any later repair invoice | What still needs to be checked? |
| A service message | The exact wording or a photo taken while parked | Which service does this refer to? |
| Little or no history | Your current mileage and any known recent work | What information or inspection would help us establish a starting point? |
Use the service display alongside the maintenance booklet
BMW directs owners to follow both the vehicle’s maintenance display and its maintenance booklet. Its 2025 booklet explains that some service needs depend on time, mileage, and driving conditions, and that certain tasks do not appear separately in the display. Use the information for your own model and year rather than a schedule copied from another BMW.
You can find the manufacturer’s guidance through BMW’s maintenance information. The 2025 maintenance booklet illustrates these distinctions; it is not a schedule for every vehicle.
Tell us how the car is behaving
Let us know about warning lights, unusual sounds, or changes in how the car drives when you arrange the visit. Include when you first noticed the concern and when it happens. That helps us discuss whether you need routine maintenance, an inspection, or a separate diagnostic appointment.
Ask for a plan you can understand
At Performance Motor Works in Rocklin, we review service history and factory maintenance needs, explain our recommendations, and keep you informed with photos and digital documentation. You can see how that communication works in Dan’s service tracking video.
Before deciding on work, ask what is due under the maintenance schedule, what an inspection found, and what still needs to be confirmed. If your records have gaps, ask which recommendations address those gaps and why. Keep the completed invoice so the next visit starts with a clearer history.
